This Devotional's Hebrew Word

(To awaken )

The wicked flee though no one pursues,
but the righteous are as bold as a lion.
—Proverbs 28:1

We continue with devotional thoughts from the Book of Proverbs every Friday. One of the 11 books in the Torah known as the Ketuvim, Hebrew for “writings,” Proverbs is part of the “wisdom tradition,” which also includes Job and Ecclesiastes.

These past few years have been a challenge for so many of us. The combination of the pandemic and the increasing levels of conflict and instability in the world have made people more anxious than ever. According to the American Psychology Association, stress and anxiety are at the highest levels on record. People are more afraid for the future than ever before.

What gives us confidence in the future? What guarantee do we have during difficult times that things will eventually work out for the best? For people of faith, the only answer is that we have confidence for the future is that we know and have faith that God is on the throne.

Confidence for the Future

We see this lesson in Proverbs, as the writer assures us, “The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.” Have you ever thought about what life is like for people who don’t have faith in God? What gives them confidence in the future?

The generations before us have dealt with problems at least as challenging as what we face today. But if someone lacks faith in God and His promises, what reason is there to think that things will turn around? Lack of faith leaves no way out of fear in difficult times.

Faith in God and His Word lights our way. No matter how challenging our struggles, we know that God’s plan is guaranteed. We read the Bible and we know that the end of the story is good. This confidence in the future is the fruit of faith. So, the way I see it, the stronger our faith, the less we fear.

Your turn: Have you been anxious or fearful? Remind yourself that you can have confidence for the future because God is on the throne.
