“Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.”— 2 Samuel 10:12

This week, discover the meaning of biblical freedom from the devotional teachings of Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein.

If you have ever felt alone in your faith, whether at the office or in your neighbourhood or even within your own family, you know how difficult it can be to stand up for yourself. You know how uncomfortable and unpleasant it feels to be surrounded by those who don’t share your beliefs and values.

The people of Israel live in that tension every day. Israel is surrounded by enemies on all sides —enemies who are openly hostile to her and threaten her with violence. For her own safety, Israel has had to take a strong stand against the attacks of her enemies. We are often criticized for this by those who want us to stop fighting. But if we stop fighting for our freedom, we will most certainly lose it.

I am reminded of a situation that the armies of Israel faced in the Bible. You’ll find the story in 2 Samuel, chapter 10. Israel’s army was surrounded, with battle lines in front of them and behind them. The Ammonites were on one side of them, and the Arameans were on the other side. Joab, commander of Israel’s army, rallied the troops, saying, “Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God.” He knew that they were not just fighting to win a battle; they were fighting for their right to live, for their families, and for the freedom to worship God.

Today, Israel continues to take such a stand, knowing that we don’t just fight to gain a victory — we fight to preserve our families and our existence.

According to former Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky, a true champion and fighter for Israel and freedom everywhere, Israel is at the forefront of fighting for freedom not only for her own people, but also for the world.

He has said, “We are defending our mutual values of which we believe — that man is created in the image of God, that there are basic principles of human rights, and that fighting for those principles and rights is a big effort worth the sacrifice.

“The moment we stop fighting, we will cease to exist,” Sharansky said. “The free world will also lose its freedom. So that’s why we will not stop fighting. We will not stop defending our freedom and the freedom of the world, and that’s why it’s so important that we have our Christian friends support us.”

Whenever you feel surrounded by those who challenge or attack your faith in God, remember not to feel alone in your belief, because ultimately, “The Lord will do what is good in his sight.”
